Definition

3D printing (also called additive manufacturing) is a manufacturing technology that fabricates three-dimensional physical parts by depositing or solidifying material in successive thin horizontal cross-sections (layers) directly from digital 3D models.

Cost Impact

Every 3D printing cost line traces back to the process itself: material grams, machine hours, and the labour around each print. The calculator models all three so quotes reflect how FDM actually consumes filament and time.

How 3D Printing Works

A 3D model is designed in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software or downloaded as an STL or 3MF file. A slicer then translates the geometry into G-code instructions. The 3D printer reads these commands and deposits melted PLA, PETG, or photopolymer resin layer upon layer until the finished physical object is complete.

Major 3D Printing Technologies

The two most common consumer and prototyping technologies are FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), which uses thermoplastic filament spools, and Resin 3D Printing (SLA/MSLA), which cures liquid photopolymer resins with UV light for high-precision figurines and dental models.

Relevance in Cost Estimation & Print Pricing

Accurately pricing 3D prints requires combining filament weight material costs, print time machine hourly rates, plate setup fees, and electricity consumption. Job quoting tools like the MakerWorld Estimator automate these formulas for single and multi-part batches.
