Resin 3D Printing / SLA / MSLA
Resin 3D printing (encompassing SLA, MSLA, and DLP technologies) is an additive manufacturing method where a light source (laser or high-resolution LCD screen) cures liquid photopolymer resin into solid plastic layer by layer inside a vat.
Resin printing shifts cost from filament grams toward resin volume, IPA washing, gloves and UV curing. Post-processing consumables add a labour component that FDM quotes usually ignore.
Estimate it in the 3D printing cost calculator →FDM vs Resin Comparison
While FDM printing uses extruded plastic filaments suitable for functional, structural parts, resin printing achieves microscopic resolutions (down to 18–35 microns), making it the gold standard for tabletop miniatures, dental aligners, and detailed jewelry casting.
Post-Processing Requirements
Resin prints require dedicated post-processing workflows: washing in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to strip unpolymerized resin, removing delicate support structures, and secondary UV curing in a cure station.
Resin Cost Accounting
Resin pricing models must account for consumable costs beyond raw resin ($25–$60/kg), including replacement FEP/Release films, IPA bath replenishment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
