Print Plate (Build Plate) — Multi-Plate Batch Layouts
A plate represents an individual build surface layout within a 3D printing project. Complex multi-part assemblies on platforms like MakerWorld are distributed across multiple sequenced plates (Plate 1, Plate 2, etc.) grouped by color or material.
Each additional plate adds a setup run and its plate fee, even when total material weight is unchanged. Multi-plate models therefore carry more fixed cost — the estimator prices every plate separately and sums them.
Estimate it in the 3D printing cost calculator →Batching Models Across Plates
Distributing models across multiple plates allows printers to fabricate distinct color batches separately without needing multi-color filament switches on every single layer, significantly reducing purge waste and total machine run time.
Plate Capacity & Batch Optimization ($K_p$)
Calculators analyze the individual weight and dimensions of each plate to determine plate capacity ($K_p$). Large parts print 1-per-plate, whereas small items can pack 8 to 12 units per plate, saving setup fees.
Plate Setup Cost Multipliers
Each physical plate run requires operator labor to clear the build bed, apply adhesive, and initiate calibration. The MakerWorld Estimator calculates total print runs across all plates ($N_{runs}$) to apply accurate batch setup fees.
