Wall Thickness & Perimeter Shells
Wall thickness (also called perimeters, shells, or wall loops) defines the horizontal thickness and number of continuous solid plastic boundaries printed along the outer contours of a 3D part before generating interior infill.
Wall count is a direct weight dial: each extra perimeter adds grams and minutes on every unit. Two to three walls suit most parts; more is often paid-for strength nobody asked for.
Estimate it in the 3D printing cost calculator →The Strength Impact of Walls vs Infill
Engineering stress tests prove that increasing perimeter wall count (e.g. from 2 walls to 4 or 5 walls) increases tensile and bending strength far more effectively than increasing interior infill density, with less material waste.
Calculating Wall Count Based on Nozzle Line Width
Total wall thickness equals Wall Count × Extrusion Line Width. For a standard 0.4mm nozzle with a 0.45mm line width, 3 perimeters produce a solid 1.35mm shell.
Watertight & Load-Bearing Print Strategies
Printing functional containers or high-torque functional gears requires 4 to 6 solid walls and slightly elevated hotend temperatures to guarantee watertight layer fusion and structural integrity.
