Tolerances & Clearances (Print-in-Place)
In 3D printing, tolerance refers to the allowable deviation from nominal CAD dimensions, while clearance is the intentional gap designed between mating components to allow smooth mechanical articulation, press-fits, or print-in-place mechanisms without fusing.
Print-in-place assemblies fail when clearances are wrong, and failed assemblies cost the full print plus assembly labour. Test tolerances on small coupons before committing a batch.

For well-tuned desktop FDM printers, a design clearance gap of 0.3mm to 0.4mm is standard for smooth print-in-place moving joints and hinges. Tight friction snap-fits require 0.15mm to 0.2mm, while sloppy sliding rails use 0.5mm+.
Slicer Compensation: XY Hole & Contour Expansion
When polymer shrinkages cause bolt holes or shafts to print slightly tight, slicer settings like X-Y Hole Compensation and X-Y Contour Compensation allow operators to adjust inner and outer perimeters without redesigning the original CAD model.
Ensuring Repeatability Across Print Farms
Calibrating consistent machine clearances ensures that batch-manufactured mechanical products snap together flawlessly on assembly lines.
