Temperature Tower (Temp Tower)
A temperature tower (or temp tower) is a vertical calibration model featuring multiple identical overhangs, bridges, cones, and fine details, where each tiered section is sliced to print at a progressively higher or lower hotend temperature.
The right nozzle temperature reduces stringing, warping and weak layers - all reprint causes. A temperature tower costs a few grams and protects every production run after it.
Estimate it in the 3D printing cost calculator →How a Temp Tower Is Sliced with Dynamic G-Code
Using slicer layer change scripts or built-in calibration generators (such as in OrcaSlicer), the printer dynamically modifies the active hotend temperature at specific Z-height milestones (e.g. 220°C $ ightarrow$ 215°C $ ightarrow$ 210°C $ ightarrow$ 205°C $ ightarrow$ 200°C for PLA).
Evaluating Bridges, Stringing, and Layer Bonding
After printing, operators inspect each temperature block for crisp bridging, minimal stringing, sharp 60° overhangs, and gloss finish, then attempt to snap each section by hand to test mechanical layer adhesion strength.
Selecting the Optimal Spool Preset
Finding the sweet spot ensures the operator selects a temperature that maximizes mechanical strength while eliminating surface defects and oozing on production runs. The chosen temperature also feeds material selection: PETG and ASA trade speed for strength at higher nozzle temperatures, as compared in the material cost comparison.
