The firmware calculates a mathematical height matrix (mesh) and micro-adjusts the Z-axis stepper motors in real-time while printing to maintain a constant layer height across uneven surfaces.

Early printers used physical deployable pins (BLTouch) or inductive metal sensors. Modern high-speed machines like Bambu Lab and Prusa MK4 employ nozzle-integrated piezoelectric strain gauges or high-frequency eddy current coils that tap the nozzle tip directly onto the sheet, eliminating manual Z-offset calibration entirely.
