AMF File Format
AMF (Additive Manufacturing File Format) is an ASTM/ISO standard XML-based open format created to succeed STL by natively storing color, gradient materials, internal lattice structures, constellations, and metadata.
AMF files rarely carry slicer metadata, so cost estimation from AMF geometry uses volume heuristics instead of exact weights. Expect a wider accuracy band and verify with a sliced profile before quoting large orders.

While STL files describe geometry using flat planar triangles, AMF introduces curved triangular patches for mathematically smooth surfaces without ballooning polygon counts. It also supports graded multi-material transitions and internal microstructure cavities.
Adoption & Modern Slicer Integration
Although 3MF has seen broader adoption among desktop slicers like Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, AMF remains heavily utilized in aerospace, medical implant modeling, and academic additive manufacturing research.
Role in Multi-Color & Multi-Material Quoting
By defining multiple material volumes within a single file header, AMF enables slicing engines to calculate discrete volume usage per extruder for accurate cost quoting in dual-extrusion or multi-material jobs.
